Fact Sheet

Vincente K. Tibbs Child Development Center was established in September 1973. He was a pioneer in recognizing the need of the community and urged the City of Englewood to apply for federal funds. Mr. Tibbs died before the center was opened. The City of Englewood and a group of concerned citizens worked to make his dream reality. However, the permanent site was not ready in September 1973 and the center made its home at Galilee Methodist Church at 325 Genesee Avenue until September 1974. At that time, the center which bears Mr. Tibbs’ name opened its door at its permanent location at 183 William Street, across from McKay Park tennis courts, in Englewood, New Jersey.

The center’s purpose then, as it is now, is to provide quality care for the children whose parents are attending school or working. In a warm and caring environment, the children experience a variety of stimulating activities which promote their individual growth and development.

Tibbs is an all-day pre-school which provides comprehensive direct care service to children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 5, without regard to race, color, creed, religion, ethnic background, national origin, disability, or sex. The center is open year round, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The center receives federal funds and state funds under OFC and city funds. The nutrition program provides a daily breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack funded through the Child Care Food Program.
